Classification of Asbestos Removal Types
Asbestos removal operations are classified into three types based on risk level and the nature of the materials involved:
Low Risk
Type I asbestos work involves activities such as minor repairs or the removal of non-friable asbestos-containing materials without significant disturbance. However, these activities must still follow the requirements of Ontario Regulation 278/05 to minimize the release of asbestos fibers and protect workers and occupants. Examples include removing vinyl floor tiles without breaking or cutting.
Moderate Risk
Activities involving limited disturbance of friable materials or extensive removal of non-friable materials. Examples include removing ceiling tiles, pipe insulation using glove bags, or cutting non-friable asbestos cement products.
High Risk
Operations involving significant disturbance or removal of friable asbestos materials, requiring extensive containment and stringent safety measures. Examples include removing sprayed-on fireproofing, thermal insulation, and large-scale asbestos abatement in demolition projects.
